Interview #10 - Astria Legends TCG

Had an amazing interview that I had with the Astria Legends TCG. This game looks really unique creating its own style, the the cards in the game features no resources. Instead the cards use movement after their movement is used they a recycled once more before actually being scrapped within game.

DESCRIBE YOUR GAME?

The Astria Legends Card Game is themed around the adventure aspect of an RPG. You have a leader, build an team and explore your surroundings. Engage in different activities that can give you an edge in clashes, such as gathering and combining ingredients, collecting souvenirs, feeding and nurturing your creatures, visiting different landmarks, gathering support, leveling up your leader and allies, and using the a abilities of your Spectrum(s) to construct a Team strong enough to bring Unity back to Astria!

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE GAME’S NAME? Astria is the name of the fantasy world that I've been building for over 20 years. Astria Legends is the name that refers to all the lessons the astrians go through as they learn to work together. That those lessons become the Legends that shape Astria itself.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON YOUR GAME?

Almost 2 years. Though the concept of building a trading card game started back in Highschool. This is the 4th or 5th iteration of that dream, but the FIRST that has ever made it to actual publication!

WHAT MAKES YOUR GAME DIFFRENT FROM OTHER TCG'S?

There are a few things that make this TCG stand out. First there are no resource cards. Every card has a resource amount (called Movement) printed on the card that you can use to play other cards. On top of that, almost any card that resolves on the field or is erased from the field, goes into your Movement Palette to be used as movement before being scrapped. This means you can use each card twice! Secondly, there are SINs. These cards represent all the villains in the Astria Galaxy and they tempt you each turn. When active, they spread a negative field effect on all players and become an Ai-like additional opponent! These cards are in a separate SIN deck that you have the ability to also customize. Third, while most games that have a "commander" or "leader" you only get one, and you build your deck around that one. In this game, you put exactly 7 leaders in your deck and you get 3 of them (at random) to use as your leaders during the game. It gives you 3 chances at building teams and defeating your opponent, but you also don't know what leader you will have until its time to flip them over during the game. This makes each game unique and different even if you play the same deck and adds strategy into your deck-building! Other than that, I wanted the game's language to be simple. I watch a lot of card games and if you don't know the language of the game, its hard to follow. I made my game with that in mind, so if someone sat down and listened to the game, having never seen it before, the vocabulary would be easy to understand. You're "mixing ingredients" or "using movement" or "attaching weapons" or "feeding your creatures" or "collecting souvenirs" etc...

WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU HAD IN CREATING THIS GAME?

The biggest challenge is getting players for the game. Because this is not a "Kickstarter project" or a mainstream game, its hard to get new people to get behind it. Marketing has always been a toughest part of the process.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CARD IN THE GAME?

Of course! My favorite card is Ila Red Ambroshia! Mainly because Red is my character in my world but also this has a Power called Crescent Flame + that has a chance to do up to 60 damage (only if you can get a great dice roll)!

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR YOUR GAME?

Right now the main goal is building up the community around the game. I'll be attending some art fairs and conventions, especially next year when all the TCG conventions happen! I am also working on the second set as well as a new format of play!

AS A CREATOR, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO ARE TRYING TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS?

Don't compare your success to others. We are all on our own journey! And remember that it is perfectly OK to start small. Start where you are at and grow from there. Grow at your own pace! Start with your best friend, then your group of friends, then locally... just start!
