Had an amazing interview that I had with the Universe of Legends TCG. I love the concept of this game being a Ranger, and that a Dimensional Ranger where you protect your universe. The gameplay has a lot of similarities from classic tcgs that everyone has played, so will be really fun, and easy to get into.
DESCRIBE YOUR GAME?
Universe of Legends is a game that puts players in the role of a Dimensional Ranger that is tasked in protecting your defined Universe. Every Universe is different and allows players to create decks that fit their play style and contain unique variants of characters and locations from different dimensions. With familiar game mechanics from popular TCG's (Yugioh, Digimon, MTG, and Dual Masters), Universe of Legends is sure to be easy to pick up and master for all players.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE GAME’S NAME?
As I was working on UofL, a lot of ideas came to mind. The original concept of the game was characters fighting on platforms above earth with the galaxy as a backdrop. As I leaned more into dimensional and time travel aspect of the lore, I deviated from the original concept but wanted to keep that idea of the Universe part of the game. As for the "Legends" part, I wanted to include people of color from history who are either know or unknown Legends. Legends was always going to be in the title just had to find the best way to use it.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON YOUR GAME?
As of now, this game has been in the works for over a year. Most of the development was trying to define a concept that worked and tweaking gameplay.
What makes your game different from other TCGs?
As I mentioned before, a lot of the mechanics are similar to other games. The aspect I believe sets my game apart is the fact I focus on the representation of characters of color. I want players not only to enjoy the game but feel connected to the characters in way let's them be part of the universe as well.
WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU HAD IN CREATING THIS GAME?
Time!! Besides art, I'm currently the sole person working on this game. Working a full time job and having a one year old takes up a good bit of time. But in my free time I try to work on things bit by bit to meet my own personal deadlines.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CARD IN THE GAME?
At the moment, my favorite card is Tye, Guerilla Raider. He originally was a generic pirate from a universe where the pirates are musically inclined. He is the only "Real" pirate so his abilities are more tied to a aggressive pirate. Out of all the games I've played with others, he always becomes an Ace monster that can help win games. Plus he has an associated item that allows him to hit hard with each attack.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR YOUR GAME?
When I first pitched this idea, I was asked the same question, and my instant response was. "I want to be in the top 3!" And to this day, I have that in mind. I'm not concerned about leaving my job 100 percent to make this career but I want this game to go far and be part of TCG history.
AS A CREATOR, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO ARE TRYING TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS?
Don't give up when things get tough. You will make something, break it, redo it and start over. Take each failure as a lesson to do better the next time. And even if one person doesn't like it, there will be 5 or 10 others who will. So don't let that stop your dream.
